I think the cost of the upgrades and the payroll support are very expensive. I just received a notice about the new 2006 version, and Simply Basic with Payroll Basic is $299.00 if purchased before November 30th. After that it will be $429.00. To purchase the 2005 version at Staples is less than $200.00. Upgrades typically do not cost as much as the software, let alone more! When I phoned Simply to complain (re: previous pricing!) I was told that it was in line with other programs. If so, I am unfamiliar with these programs!! Furthermore the notice that accompanies the info says that they are implementing "features and functionality our customers have requested." REALLY! They've never responded postively to any of my suggestions, and no! they weren't related to pricing issues. I think they are taking advantage of the fact that it is impractical for companies to change to another accounting program, and therefore they are relying on us all paying much more than the true value of the upgrade. Factor in also an additional charge if you want their "support". Yikes! I've been using this software since 1986 when it was called "Bedford Accounting." They had affordable upgrades including payroll and support back then. Does anyone else share my opinion, or am I just a stingy old grump???
