NEW HUMAN RESOURCES MODULE FOR DEXTER + CHANEY’S FOREFRONT® AUTOMATES EMPLOYEE-MANAGEMENT PROCESS

ed Human Resources module for its Forefront® Construction Management Software that automates the employee-management process in all areas of a construction business, from recruitment through retirement. The Human Resource module—designed to meet the specific needs of construction companies —handles such complex human relations issues as pay rates and benefits, safety, workers’ compensation, training, drug testing and skills certification.

Human relations-related information is entered into Forefront only once and shared with Forefront’s other modules (Payroll, for example) as required. Since the Human Resources module also is fully integrated with Forefront’s Document Imaging capability, documents are available with a simple click of the mouse. Paper documents such as applications, performance reviews, drug and skills testing results, and accident reports are scanned into Forefront where they are automatically attached to specific events and employees. (More than 2,500 total users nationwide already make use of Forefront’s Document Imaging component.)

HIRING PROCESS

Human Resources helps manage the entire hiring process, including creating the job opening, recording applicant information and setting up the new employee. Resumes and applications are stored electronically in Applicant Tracking, which features sections to record impressions and assign an overall interview score to an individual job candidate. After a job offer has been accepted, the company uses the New Hire Entry screen to set up the applicant as an employee in Forefront’s Payroll and Human Resources modules.

EMPLOYEE MANAGEMENT

For each employee, the construction company can instantly access and edit such information as dependents, insurance, reviews, safety/OSHA incidents, drug and alcohol testing, training and certification and more. Human Resources allows the company to set up and maintain recurring payroll deductions and add-ons for benefit purposes, including 401(k) deductions and employer matching contributions, “cafeteria” programs, insurance, auto allowances and other reimbursements.

CUSTOMIZATION

User-defined software triggers allow companies to tailor the software to meet their unique human resources needs. The customizable triggers automate specific actions such as warnings, e-mail notifications, and updates to data fields. They can be used to warn of empty vacation hour banks, license and certification dates expiring, and many other purposes.

“The Human Resources module was a direct response to our customers’ request that we provide an efficient, integrated method for them to manage all aspects of the human-resources process,” said John Chaney, Dexter + Chaney co-founder and president. “Human Resources’ integration with Forefront’s Document Imaging capability solves a particular issue: easily accessing the endless stream of documents that are critical to effective employee management.”

More than 1,000 construction companies throughout the United States use Dexter + Chaney’s ForefrontÒ Construction Management Software. Forefront includes 29 integrated modules that handle accounting, jobs, project management, human resources, document imaging, remote connectivity and data sharing.

Dexter + Chaney placed first in the “Service Management” category in the “2002 Information Technology Survey for the Construction Industry” by the industry group Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA). Dexter + Chaney was the first choice among respondents (25 percent) that are using or planning to use service management software—the first time that the Service Management category was included in the survey.

More than 2,500 total users make use of Forefront’s Document Imaging component, which addresses a typically painful problem for contracting firms: giving management, office staff and project managers the fast access they need to important documents like AP invoices, change orders, payroll timecards, contracts and others. Companies that use Forefront report they have improved profitability and have grown their businesses more than 200 percent without adding accounting staff.

Statistics excerpted from CFMA’s 2002 Information Technology Survey for the Construction Industry, fourth edition, with the permission of the Construction Financial Management Association, Princeton, NJ, 609-452-8000. CFMA did not evaluate nor rank software in terms of performance. The number of users indicated for any particular software product is not an indication of its superiority over comparable products, rather it is only an indication of its use among respondents. The survey should not be construed as the advice or opinion of CFMA.
